I have a tattoo. I got it in May of 2012. I hadn’t thought about getting one and then I was invited to a tattoo party that was a gift for a client of mine. It was a surprise party for her. The tattoo artist was flown in from Washington state. The guest of honor and all her guests got tattoos. We enjoyed a delicious lunch at home of colleague and then the birthday girl got the first tattoo. It was a big black symbol in the middle of her back. After that we each guest got their own tattoo. I decided on a small heart on my upper right shoulder with a teal spiral inside it. I really like spirals. As a symbol they represent journey and change of life as it unfolds. I saw my life was unfolding. I am happy with my choice. Note: the process was a little uncomfortable and yet worth it.
I wasn’t sure how my 87-year-old mother would react to my tattoo. She was fine and didn’t have much to say about it. What really surprised me was how a younger relative who has several tattoos reacted. He seemed speechless. It was if it is okay for him to get one but not appropriate for older women to do.
